Project Overview
Syon House, located near Richmond and primarily used as a wedding venue, required a comprehensive stone facade replacement. The original stonework was deteriorating, and the client needed a solution that would allow the safe and efficient transportation of new stone panels while removing old materials. The Hoist People were engaged to provide a hoist to ensure materials were moved efficiently while maintaining site safety.
The project was planned for a six-month duration, with work progressing across different elevations of the building. Given the weight of the stone materials and the requirement for ongoing debris removal, a robust and high-capacity hoist was essential.

Challenges Faced
The Syon House project presented several logistical and technical challenges that needed to be addressed:
- Soft Ground Conditions
The area designated for hoist installation featured particularly soft and muddy ground, making it difficult to manoeuvre and stabilise heavy equipment. To overcome this, the client provided heavy-duty track mats, allowing delivery vehicles to safely reverse into position for the hoist setup. - Mounting on System Scaffold
Unlike traditional hoist installations, this project required the gates to be mounted onto a system scaffold. Due to the rigid nature of system scaffolding, limited adjustability presented a challenge. The team had to develop an innovative mounting solution, ensuring the gates were securely and accurately fitted. - Quick Turnaround
The client had been let down by a previous supplier, creating an urgent need for a hoisting solution. The Hoist People were required to mobilise within four days from initial inquiry to handover, ensuring minimal disruption to the project timeline.
Proposed Solutions
To tackle these challenges, The Hoist People developed a tailored solution utilising the MABER MBC 1000.
- 1-Tonne Construction Hoist Selection
Given the weight of the stone facade materials, a 1-tonne capacity hoist was selected to ensure efficient lifting and transportation. The hoist was positioned on sleepers to prevent sinking into the soft ground and was aligned precisely with the scaffold gates for seamless operation. - Custom Scaffold Adaptations
Working closely with the site team, The Hoist People coordinated adjustments to the system scaffold, ensuring that the hoist gates were securely mounted and aligned. This involved adapting the scaffold structure to accommodate the hoist, allowing for a safe and stable integration. - Fast Deployment and Installation
The team responded quickly to the urgent request, leveraging available stock and efficient planning to complete the installation within the tight deadline. A site visit was conducted prior to installation to confirm locations and access, ensuring a smooth process on the day.
Results
- Successful Hoist Installation
Despite the challenging ground conditions and scaffold constraints, the hoist was installed safely and efficiently. The setup ensured accurate alignment with scaffold gates, allowing for seamless material transportation. - Efficient Material Handling
The construction hoist played a vital role in the project, enabling the easy lifting of new stone panels while facilitating the removal of old materials. This streamlined the workflow, reducing manual handling and increasing productivity on site. - Client Satisfaction and Additional Solutions
The rapid response and effective solution provided by The Hoist People earned positive feedback from the client. Additionally, during a site visit, the team identified an opportunity to enhance the project further by supplying an electric chain hoist. This was quickly arranged and offered with free delivery for the same hire duration, providing added value to the client.
Conclusion
The Syon House facade replacement project demonstrated The Hoist People’s ability to respond swiftly, adapt to complex site conditions, and provide an efficient and safe construction hoist solution. By overcoming ground challenges, scaffold constraints, and urgent timeframes, the team ensured smooth progress throughout the project.
